Veterinarians from across Australia and around the world are in Brisbane this week for our country’s biggest and most renowned veterinary conference – the Australian Veterinary Association (AVA) Annual Conference.

During the comprehensive four-day program of learning and skill development, more than 1200 veterinarians and industry professionals will hear all the latest research and new treatments in veterinary medicine.

The Conference will begin on Monday 14 May with Australia’s Chief Veterinary Officer, Dr. Mark Schipp, presenting one of the very first sessions. His session which is expected to draw a packed crowd will focus on one of the world’s greatest threats to human health – antimicrobial resistance.

A few session highlights include:

  • Monday 14 May, internationally renowned engineer for humanity, Jordan Nguyen, who designs life-changing technologies for people with disabilities will discuss the boundaries between human and technological evolution and intelligent technologies.
  • Wednesday 16 May, United States-based veterinary behaviourist, Dr. Theresa DePorter, will discuss the importance of socialisation in raising a healthy dog.
  • Thursday 17 May, Professor Jakob Zinsstag, deputy head of the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health at the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute will discuss One Health and its potential for integrated disease surveillance and control.

AVA President, Dr. Paula Parker said that every year the AVA Conference provides insight into new and exciting innovations in the veterinary world.

“The AVA Conference offers a world-class scientific program, providing the best education, covering the latest trends, with an impressive line-up of speakers, local talent, and thought-provoking plenaries.

“As the largest conference in our region, it takes years of planning to ensure we deliver a program that arms veterinarians with fresh knowledge and skills as well as new and exciting approaches to veterinary medicine that they can put into practice in their workplace,” Dr. Parker said.

The Australian Veterinary Association Conference and trade exhibition is being held 13-18 May at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre.
